As Alma teaches about the atonement in Alma 7, he explains:And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people.
And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities. (Alma 7:11-12)
Christ suffered for our sins so we wouldn’t have to if we would repent. He suffered our sicknesses, pains, and infirmities so that He would know how to succor us. To “succor” means to “run to.” Christ runs to us to help us, but waits for us to come unto Him and ask for His healing touch. Like the father of the Prodigal Son, as soon as we begin to come to our Savior, He will see us, even when we are still far from Him, and run to embrace us[1]. All we need to do is come unto Him.
